Preview Word, Excel and PowerPoint without downloading

A browser will not draw a .docx, an .xlsx or a .pptx. It offers to save the file, and you find out what is in it afterwards. Right-click the link, choose Open with Foretaste, and read it first.

01

Why a browser downloads these instead

Chrome, Edge and Firefox draw HTML, images and PDFs, and nothing else. An Office file is a ZIP holding a tree of XML: the text in one part, the styles in another, the pictures in a third. There is no renderer in the browser for that, so the link becomes a download and then somebody else's problem.

Foretaste unpacks the container and reads the parts itself, in the tab, in JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server, which is the difference between this and pasting a confidential workbook into a web converter.

02

What you get, and where each one stops

This table is the same source the format list is built from, so it cannot say Foretaste opens something the code does not.

Format What you see Where it stops
Word (.docx) The document on its own paper. Foretaste reads the sheet size and margins the file states, lays the text out and measures where it actually falls, and draws numbered pages - with tables split between their rows and their header row repeated on each new page, and the page breaks the author asked for. A .docx records no page breaks, only the paper, so the pages are where the text falls at this width and in these fonts - which is how a word processor decides too, and why another machine with other fonts may break a line differently. The running header and footer are part of Pro. Footnotes, endnotes and text boxes are not carried across. The old .doc format is named but not opened.
Excel (.xlsx) Every sheet as a tab, with the real cell values in a scrollable grid, and any of them copied as a Markdown table. A large workbook is read off the main thread, so the tab stays answerable while it opens. Values only. No charts, pivot tables, conditional formatting, and formulas are not recalculated.
PowerPoint (.pptx) The slides drawn, one at a time, from the deck’s own co-ordinates: text, pictures and shapes where the file puts them, in the theme’s colours, on the background the master draws, with the speaker notes underneath. A likeness, not a copy. Solid and gradient fills, transparency, outlines, drop shadows, connectors and the styles a slide inherits from its layout and master all come from the file; animation and transitions do not, and a chart or a diagram is a labelled placeholder at the size and position the deck gave it. The old .ppt format is not opened.

Word documents

You get the document on its own paper. Foretaste reads the sheet size and the margins out of the file, lays the text out, measures where every line actually falls, and draws numbered pages from that - with headings, lists, images in place, tables split between their rows and their header row repeated at the top of each new page, and the page breaks the author asked for. Enough to read a memo, check which draft of a contract you were sent, or find the one paragraph you were looking for, on the page it is really on.

It is measured, not asserted, and that distinction is worth understanding. A .docx records no page breaks at all - only the paper - so where page two begins is decided when the document is laid out, by the fonts and the width. Word decides it the same way. That means the pages here are true for this browser and these fonts, and a machine with other fonts installed may break a page somewhere else.

What is not there: the running header and footer are part of Pro, footnotes, endnotes and text boxes are not carried across, and a password-protected Word file cannot be opened at all - that encryption is separate from the container, and Foretaste carries nothing that can read it.

04

Excel workbooks

Every sheet is a tab, and the cells hold the values the file was saved with, in a grid you can scroll. Enough to see whether the columns are the ones you wanted before you commit to the download.

Values only. Nothing is recalculated, there are no charts or pivot tables, and conditional formatting is not applied. The formulas behind the values are a Pro feature; the values themselves are free, as every format is.

05

PowerPoint decks

A deck is often 10 MB to 100 MB, and the usual reason for opening one is a single slide. Foretaste places each slide's text, pictures and shapes at the co-ordinates the file gives, one slide at a time, with the speaker notes underneath.

It is a likeness rather than a copy. The deck's theme colours, its master's background and the fills, outlines and shadows a slide inherits are all read; animation and transitions are not, and a chart or a diagram arrives as a labelled placeholder at the size the deck gave it. If the exact look is the point, download it.

The three questions people ask

Can you preview a Word document in a browser without downloading it?

The document on its own paper. The file is read inside your own browser tab and is not uploaded anywhere.

How do I open an Excel file without downloading it or uploading it to Google Sheets?

Right-click the link and choose Open with Foretaste. Every sheet as a tab, with the real cell values in a scrollable grid, and any of them copied as a Markdown table. A large workbook is read off the main thread, so the tab stays answerable while it opens. Values only. No charts, pivot tables, conditional formatting, and formulas are not recalculated.

Can I see PowerPoint slides without opening PowerPoint?

The slides drawn, one at a time, from the deck’s own co-ordinates: text, pictures and shapes where the file puts them, in the theme’s colours, on the background the master draws, with the speaker notes underneath.

The file does not leave your browser

Foretaste requests the document from the website it already lives on, the same request your browser would make if you clicked the link, and parses it in the tab. There is no Foretaste server that files go to, which is why a confidential spreadsheet is a reasonable thing to open this way and an online converter is not.

That is worth one comparison, because the usual alternative works differently and says so itself. Extensions that preview an Office document commonly hand its address to a hosted viewer: Docs Online Viewer's privacy policy says clicking on the inserted link will expose the URL to the external website and names docs.google.com; XLS Editor's store description says the scanning is performed from our servers so your URL are reported to our system, with a checkbox to turn that off. Neither is uploading your file, and neither statement is a criticism — both products say they collect no personal data. It is a difference in where the document is read, and for a spreadsheet nobody outside your company should see, that difference is the whole decision. Checked 5 September 2026: policy, listing.

Exactly what Foretaste can and cannot see, or how a ZIP is listed without downloading it, which is the same container these three formats are built on. OpenDocument files open too, through the same readers: .odp is drawn by the slide renderer above, .ods becomes the same grid of sheets, and .odt is a reading view of the text rather than a paginated one. We also have a guide on how to view a PDF without downloading, and if a document link forces an automatic download, see what to do when a link downloads instead of opening.
